Ladies Golf Blossoming in North East Scotland

Only 12% of golf club members in the UK are female! A shockingly low percentage and one that surely has to grow if golf is to stop the downward trend in popularity.

However, the North East of Scotland is showing postive signs of growth in participation thanks to the work of PGA Professional, Peter Myers of Dunes Golf Centre in Fraserburgh.

Peter, hails from Yorkshire and moved North to take over the running of the Golf Centre, located next door to Fraserburgh Golf Club – the 7th oldest in the World, in September 2015.

Here is what Peter has to say…

“I listened to a presentation by Alastair Spink, the founder of love.golf in the January of 2016,” states Peter, “and this made my mind up to join the love.golf coaching community and inspired me to drive ladies golf forward.”

“I ran my first class in August of 2016 and since then it has grown rapidly. Rosehearty Golf Club is next door to where I live and 2 years ago they had only 3 female members! Now they have nearly 50 and that number is growing all the time.”

It isn’t just Roshearty that is benefitting, the other local clubs; Fraserburgh, Inverallochy, Longside and Peterhead have all seen female playing numbers increase significantly with Inverallochy recently boasting that a record 20 women had entered their weekly Thursday evening 9 hole event!

However, the good news doesn’t just stop there. As more women have started playing, so too have their husbands, many of whom had abandoned their clubs in the garage years ago have now found they are left at home whilst she is out playing. On top of this, if both parents are playing the chances the kids will golf too goes up significantly. And, we very much believe that golf is a perfect sport for the whole family to play together.

What better way to spend a weekend than going out to play with the family and then talking about the highs and lows of the round over supper? Beats everyone just retreating to their electronic devices to spend the evening in silence in a virtual world.

Love.golf community continues to grow…

Once again, on Saturday 14th July we had a full turn out of 36 ladies taking part in our love.golf Summer Scramble at Rosehearty.

The spaces for this event were snapped up in just 30 minutes of going live, such is the popularity and strength of our love.golf community!

I have been delivering love.golf coaching sessions at Dunes Golf Centre and on the local courses for just under 2 years and in that time I am proud to have introduced over 200 women to the game!

Love.golf = think differently!

Tradtionally, golf coaching has focused on learning skills on a practice range.

love.golf takes an alternative approach based on proven academic studies and market research that shows many women prefer to learn through the actual playing of the game within a supported environment.

Fundamental skills are still introduced but only when required, and in context, on the golf course.

How is your golf season going?

Are you frustrated and under-performing?

There’s still time to salvage your season and stop the upward handicap trend. In most cases it’s because one part of your set up or swing has fallen out of position.

However, the problem is that it’s very difficult to be able to identify what part is off when you are trying to find the answers on your own.

Perhaps your ball position has crept too far forward (or back) in your stance which can cause problems with angle of attack on the ball as well as club path through impact.

Or, perhaps it’s the alignment of your body to the target? Mis-aligning is often the cause of bad swing technique, but it can also be a compensation for another fault.

Just like I am doing here, you too will be speculating as to the possible causes of your golfing woes!

We have all done it… you go on a merry go round of trying a new grip, a new posture or a new takeaway, desperately hoping to find the answer. You hit one good shot and think ‘that’s it!’ but follow it up with a bad shot and you think of something else.

Before you know it, you have layered up thought after thought and have tied yourself in knots! Add this to the advice that your amateur playing partners throw at you and you feel like giving it up!

Rosehearty love.golf Scramble Success

Last Saturday, 36 women took to the fairways of Rosehearty Golf Club for the fifth love.golf scramble and what a beautiful day of weather we had for it.


The event is designed to give new golfers the chance to play in a proper tournament and also to meet their fellow love.golfers from other groups.
These now famous Scrambles take place three times a year; Spring, Summer and Christmas and they are hugely popular. This one filled up within 20 minutes of places being available on the website…One of the even women stated that getting a space at the scramble is hotter than an Ed Sheeran concert ticket!


It’s not just the golf that makes them popular though; after playing we headed in to Masons for drinks and a meal followed by entertainment. This time everyone enjoyed a quiz, thanks to Dawn Cardno who put it together and delivered it superbly! After the quiz I turned in to DJ and we danced the night away and I must say we saw some impressive moves, especially from Carol!

Back to the golf and the tournament was a very close-run affair as two teams tied with the top score meaning we had to separate them on a countback.
Emma Myers, Fiona Farquhar, Ray Buchan and Carol West were unlucky to miss out on first place despite Ray holing from off the green on the first hole for a two!

Taking the top spot was Dawn Cardno, Anne Johnston, Marie Davidson and Carol Mathers with both teams having completed the nine holes in 37 shots.


Congratulations to the winners and to everyone who took part. A huge thanks to Rosehearty Golf Club and all the members for letting us have the course for a couple of hours. The ladies loved it and many will be joining as members as a result of playing the course.

Also, a big thanks to Debbie and her team at the Masons Arms for a lovely meal and great service in the bar that made the day even more special.

The secret to longer tee shots!

In the winter months, the cold air and soft ground means we all lose yardage on our shots.
You can reduce this effect by creating a higher ball flight on your drives, which will mean a longer carry through the air.
The set-up position I have demonstrated here is crucial if you want to hit long, high, straight drives as it will help you to deliver the best angle of attack on the ball.

Angle of attack (AoA) is how your driver head comes into the ball as you would look at the strike from face on.  Either you are catching it at the bottom of the arc, which would be a 0 degree angle of attack, or you are catching it before or after that lowest point of the arc.

Much research has revealed that to hit your longest drives, you need to hit up on the ball about 2-5 degrees.

How big of a difference can there be? 

Well, according to Golf Magazine, the difference between a -5 AoA and a +5 AoA is about 25 yards of distance at a 90 mph clubhead speed.  You would potentially go from around 235 to around 260 without using more effort!  At higher clubhead speeds, the difference will be even more.

Love.golf on Tour – Portugal 2017

Around this time last year I was on the golf course at Rosehearty giving a lesson to a group of love.golf ladies.

We were on the second green, the wind was blowing and it was freezing cold!

One of the women turned to me and said. “Peter, you are going to have to take us somewhere warmer for golf lessons!”

To which I instantly responded, “OK, let’s go to Portugal!”

Thinking this was just a throw away comment, I didn’t take any further action but the following week I was asked if I had put plans in place for said trip to Portugal.

So, having discovered the statement was in all seriousness, I got to work and the love.golf on tour trip to Portugal was conceived.

Just under a year later we were on the plane to the Algarve, Salgados near Albufeira to be more precise, for a week long golfing holiday.

For many on the trip it was the first time they had played abroad and for a few it was the first time they had played 18 holes in a day. The trip was a huge success and everyone enjoyed playing golf in the sun followed by good food, drinks and loads of laughs.

“I’ll never forget my first 18 hole round in the sun at a top course called Morgado in Portugal. Not bad for someone who only started playing just over a year ago!” Thelma Hutchison

My reflections from the week are; golf is so much more than just a game. New friendships have been formed that will last a lifetime. Golf brings people of all ages and abilities together who may otherwise never meet.

The experience of playing different courses is a real feature of the game. Unlike sports such a badminton or tennis – the variety of court in which we play is almost infinite. Even the same course on two different days can feel and play very differently.

Playing golf is the best way to learn the game. I acted as a guide throughout the week and was on hand to help answer any questions but lots was learned, that cannot be taught on the range, just through playing the game.

Golf is an easy game to play!
Yes, I know many of you may not quite believe this statement but given that nearly all the group have been playing for less than 2 years it was proof that golf is easy to start playing. It is difficult to turn pro, to win majors etc. but just getting out to play the game has never been easier.

Water is a magnet for golf balls!
Now this is certainly a statement you will agree with more strongly than the last one I am sure. Salgados had water on just about every hole and it was amazing how many times the players’ balls seemed to find the drink!
In nearly every instance, the player would state after the errant shot – “I knew I was going to do that!”
….Interesting!
Some of my regular readers may recall the articles I wrote on the mental side of the game where I asked you NOT to think of a pink elephant?

In this instance the player is certainly telling themselves, “Don’t go in the water!”

As I have previously explained the mind does not have an image for, nor understand the command, “Don’t!” Therefore, all you are really saying just before you play the shot is “Don’t go in the water!”

Therefore, you could conclude you are actually better than you give yourself credit for as you acted out your thoughts!

Be careful what you say to yourself, try to focus on what you would like to do and accept that there are many bad results that you don’t want.

Kris sets his sights on 2018 success

Kris Nicol has had a good 2017 season with the highlight winning the Scottish Young Professional’s Championship at West Lothian in July.

However, like all golfers, he wants to make 2018 even better and the planning for that starts now.

Despite the 2017 golf season only just coming to an end, now is time to reflect on areas that were good but also the parts of the game that could be improved upon.

Kris sat down with me last week and we went through his whole game and identified the key areas for development.

We created a plan.

1.Full Swing – Less curvature on the ball flight.

Kris wants to neutralise his ball flight, in other words – play with less curvature so his misses are less destructive.

The technology in the golf studio at Dunes allows us to measure exactly how he delivers the club to the ball and, whilst he is consistent, he has a club path through the ball that is more to the right of the target (in to out) than he would like and with a clubface that gets too closed (aiming left of this path). This combination leads to too much right to left curvature and a ball that finishes left, also a tendency to ‘block’ the ball straight right on occasions.

Kris gets the clubhead too closed in the backswing, a position that shows the clubface looking too much down to the ground in his takeaway.

He also feels, especially when the tournament is on the line, that he loses his rhythm too easily.

I watched him hit some shots and listened to his feedback carefully.

We identified the backswing, as well as getting the club closed, is in two pieces and needs to be smoother to help with his rhythm.

Using the video feedback we could see that at halfway back the right elbow was too straight and the clubface was looking down to the ground.

“I’ve now got a feeling of flowing back letting my right elbow fold in more and a sense that the club is opening up. I’m not transfixed on a certain position but a feeling of an overall flow.” Stated Kris.

2.Wedge Play
We could all do to improve our wedge play and at the level Kris is performing, this is the area of the game he needs to be razor sharp at.

His bad shot was a weak shot to the right caused by a path that was too much to the right (like his full shots described above) and an angle of attack on the ball that is too shallow.

Kris fixed this with a simple feeling of swinging the club left of target whilst holding the clubface square. I helped Kris come up with his own solution by asking him to try to move the ball from left to right in to the green, the opposite of what he currently does.

As a result, the swing path was straighter (not left – which is what he was feeling) and his angle of attack was steeper meaning he could compress the ball against the clubface better, create more spin and have much better control on the distance of his wedge shots.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TOLD TO ‘KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN’?

Why this is the biggest myth in golf…

Every week I hear amateur golfers telling each other that the cause of the bad shot they just hit was because they lifted their head.

This is usually followed by the instruction “KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN!”

I even have pupils tell me after a bad shot in a lesson that they ‘knew’ what went wrong there… “I lifted my head!”

I often show the pupil the video back and prove to them that they did not lift their head and in actual fact, the thought keeping their head down was one of the main causes of the bad shot.

This SHOCK news is often hard to take on board, so ingrained is this thought in the mind of the amateur golfer. In fact, this swing advice seems the fix for pretty much every bad shot.

Let me help you now…GET RID OF THE THOUGHT ‘KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN!’ It will be one of the best things you do for your golf game, AND your physical health!

In over 20 years as a PGA golf coach I can tell you how many times someone lifting their head was the cause of a bad shot – NOT ONCE!

Most advanced level players understand that keeping the head down is some what undesired and once they have hit the shot they allow the head to release freely.

An inhibited head movement in the follow through restricts shoulder rotation, weight transfer and then ultimately club path through impact. It will also effect the release of the forearms and club head.

Worse still, it putts extra strain on your back and neck and, if you were to rotate effectively through impact and keep you head ‘down’ at the same time, you would rupture the top of your spine!

Annika Sorenstam – A great example of head movement

Keeping your head down also effects your starting posture. The spine becomes curved and with the chin tucked in to your chest you cannot turn properly and build up power. In many cases keeping the head down like this actually causes the body to lift in the backswing as the shoulder pushes the chin up.

Jim Mclean and Hank Haney are two of the Worlds’ top coaches and here is what they have to say:

“Many top players never see the ball at impact or even in the downswing. Players that do this include – Annika Sorenstam, David Duval, Jim Furyk, Steve Elkington and Paul Azinger. You must almost consciously look up at the target quickly after impact or risk hanging on the right side too long and restricting the movement of the body.”

”I worked with Tiger to look up very quickly almost before he hit the shot like David Duval and Annika Sorenstam. Releasing the head early really helps to stop the body from working underneath and back in the downswing.”

I hear so many well intentioned parents, grandparents, husbands, friends and so on telling the new golfer to ‘keep their head down’.

I cringe when I hear this as I know what damage it does to a potentially good golf swing. So, please stop giving out this terrible advice and start letting yourself and your fellow golfers develop a swing that flows through to face the target, just like all good players do!

STOP TELLING EACH OTHER TO KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN – PLEASE!

You could argue that there are many top players who are still looking at the ground where the ball was after impact but I can tell you that this is not a conscious effort. You will see that the head is free to rotate with the body thus allowing the swing to sequence better, creating more power and greater accuracy.

Next time you go to the range – give it a go for yourself and experience the freedom of movement and extra power you can create.

To consistently play your best golf you must step up to every golf shot without fear and doubt. The method I use to help achieve this is called
‘THINK BOX – PLAY BOX’ and was developed by Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott whilst they were working with Annika Sorenstam.

It is very easy to practice – all you need is an alignment stick or a piece of string that you lay down on the floor as pictured here.

The THINK BOX is the area in which you analyse the lie of the ball, the club you will use, wind direction, the type of shot you want to play etc. It is in here you decide on your swing thought and take your practice swing.

You should verbalise to yourself your intentions for the shot, “I intend to send the ball towards the left greenside bunker and let the wind move it towards the flag in the middle of the green. It is a good, firm 5 iron for me.”

Imagine the shot you are going to hit. Take a step across the DECISION LINE and in to the PLAY BOX -when you cross this line you should quit thinking and just play! The only time there is any indecision should be when you are in
the THINK BOX.

When you cross the DECISION LINE to hit the shot, there MUST be total commitment to the shot. If you get over the ball and you are not comfortable with the decision you have made, back off, retreat to the THINK BOX and come up with a plan in which you have trust.

In the PLAY BOX you need to be efficient and not waste time; simply aim the club face, take your hold, align the body, connect to the target, and hit your shot. The longer you wait the more opportunity there is for doubt and tension to build in your mind and body. I have talked in the past about how tension is
the biggest wrecker of a golf swing!

Decide – Commit – Swing. It’s as simple as that!

Think of it as skydiving. In the THINK BOX you pack the parachute, pick the jump site and do all the other preparations. In the PLAY BOX you just jump. I recently received a telephone message from one of my pupils that simply said. “Please tell Peter – the parachute opened!”

Playing DO golf

Unlock your golfing potential
This is the fourth post in a mini-series on the ‘inner game’ of golf. Only through a ‘holistic’ approach to your golf game, including working on the ‘inner game’, will you start to realise you potential and enjoy your golf more.

Playing Do Golf…

A couple of weeks ago I talked about how most golfers play ‘Don’t Golf’ in that they make a statement before each shot about what they don’t want to do. Eg. “Don’t go in the water,” right before doing just that!

Get your game on TRAC

This is a routine you should apply to every shot you play…

Target – pick a shot to play, every shot must have a purpose!

Routine – practice swing rehearsal, implement/feel the key swing ingredients

Acceptance – You can deal with good/bad shots and outcomes – go on a mission! (see below)

Commitment – Play the shot you have chosen

After the shot, when the club goes back in the bag, that is closure on the shot.

It is DONE and DONE MEANS DONE!

After each shot start the TRAC process again when you get within a set distance of the ball (say 20 yards)

Did you know?

You will only play golf for about 30 minutes in a 4 hour round including all your routines. The rest of the time is simply walking, during which you should be enjoying the company, the views, the fresh air and exercise.

Interesting fact:

Your club is in contact with the ball for 0.0004 seconds per shot. So, in a round of 80 shots you have influenced the ball for a total of only 0.03 seconds!

On a Mission

Let’s break down the word mission…

Ions are atoms or molecules that are either positively or negatively charged.

To go on a mission you MISS the IONS by being neither positive nor negative and instead to get yourself in to a NEUTRAL mindset.

POSITIVE THOUGHT                                  Vs                                NEGATIVE THOUGHT

I will hit the green with this shot           Vs        I am going to put this in the pond

NEUTRAL THOUGHT – Is it possible to hit the green?

By asking if it is possible you are not saying you will, which is nearly always a lie! And you are not thinking negatively by stating what you don’t want to do.

If the answer to the “Is it possible?” questions is Yes but not likely, then you should reselect your choice of shot.

You are faced with a shot between the branches of a tree that is only 3” wide, it would be possible to send the ball through but with a very low success rate. An ‘off the wall’ positive person would still take the shot on so this is where some negativity needs to be added to create a neutral, balanced mindset.

Approaching most activities in life with a neutral mindset pays dividends. In many instances creating some negativity creates balance that allows for good decision making. An example is when my son was very young, he once ran straight across the road without looking. I had to explain to him some negative reasons as to why we need to stop, look and listen!

Improve your game without changing your swing

Unlock your golfing potential
This is the third week in a mini-series on the ‘inner game’ of golf. Only through a ‘holistic’ approach to your golf game, including working on the ‘inner game’, will you start to realise you potential and enjoy your golf more.

The Performance Triangle
Have you ever noticed how your performance dips when you least want it to? For most golfers the most obvious case is when we get a ‘Medal’ card in our hands.

Is it playing from a slightly longer course that makes the difference?

Have you often played well leading up to the medal only to find that your game deserts you on the day?

We have already discussed the fact that tension is the biggest wrecker of a golf swing and come medal day I have no doubt this plays a part. However, I also believe there is another force at work and it is to do with your focus of attention.

The Performance Triangle (below left) shows Performance (Score or shot outcome), Learning and Enjoyment. You will play your best golf when you have equal amounts of focus on each of the three parts. In other words, when you reside dead centre of the triangle where the green dot is.

Come medal day we naturally focus more on our score and very often golfers lose sight, albeit temporarily, of the enjoyment factor. A good score becomes the sole focus and the perception is that “if I score well, I will enjoy it”.

Golf by its very nature is a game focused on score – after all, the objective of the game is to play the course in as few shots as possible.

Further focus on score is created by the golfers themselves – after nearly every competitive round the first question I hear golfers ask each other is, “What have you shot today?”

My advice is to focus on what you can enjoy today. Stay present by playing one shot at a time and after the round reflect upon what you have learned.

Johnny Miller, who won The Open in 1976 once said, “I would have been a fool not to have been a good golfer. After every game of golf my father asked me only two questions – what have your learned today son? And, what have you enjoyed?”

Here are a couple of practical exercises you can do…

1.Three Shot Diary
After every round of golf write up, in detail, the three best shots you have played that day. Make each description as vivid as you can including details such as weather, the distance, club used, your thoughts, how it felt etc.

It should be written in such a way that the reader can experience the shot too.

There are numerous benefits to this exercise;

  1. You finish the round reflecting on the positives – certainly more enjoyable than talking about all the negatives!
  2. During a round, no matter what your score or shot you have just played – the next shot becomes an opportunity to be one for your diary.
  3. If your game ever enters a slump or before a particularly important game of golf simply reading back through all your successes will set you in a better frame of mind.

The final point helps to create a positive affirmation. An affirmation is a declaration that something is true. Many golfers create negative affirmations such as, “I’m a bad driver of the golf ball.”

The three shot diary will help you to create an affirmation but one that is positive and therefore much more beneficial to your golf game.

2.Good Shot Tally
Simply write down on a piece of paper or the side of a scorecard a tally mark for every good shot you hit. Just count how many there were each game. Don’t worry too much about the number of good shots, just aim to get a tally mark for every shot you hit, including putts!
