New classes to help your golf

Have you started playing golf this year?

There is no doubt golf has benefitted recently by being one of the few social and sporting activities that have been allowed to restart safely.

Most, if not all, the local clubs have seen a huge increase in membership numbers, and we have certainly seen an influx of new golfers coming to the range.

We are seeing lots of men aged 18 to 40 starting the game as a replacement for playing sports like football and cricket.

We have also had many conversations with these golfers, most of which are competitive by nature and want to improve but have found that turning to the internet, and YouTube in particular, is causing more confusion than providing any benefit.

Join a Golf Clinic at Dunes

We have come up with the perfect solution to help you get the information you need to play better golf.

The Golf Clinics at Dunes, hosted by PGA qualified professional – Sam Griffiths, will shine a light on the thing you need to do to improve your game and have more fun.

The group sessions, covering three key aspects of the game will give you the time to practice what you have learned under the guidance of the Pro.

Each clinic runs over two sessions with the first being the one that identifies your key area for improvement and the second one to check up and reinforce the new information.

“The ‘two-session’ clinics will provide each student with the opportunity to spend a week practicing the new information I have shared with them in the first week,” states PGA Pro Sam Griffiths, “Having the second week to check on progress and make any adjustments will be key to ensure each student makes good progress and achieves their goals”

Book you space now. Spaces are limited to just 8 per class to allow plenty of time for the coach to work individually with each pupil.

Kris Nicol Shares His Secrets to Better Golf

Many of you will have heard of him but for those that don’t know, Kris Nicol is one of the PGA Golf Professionals at Dunes Golf Centre in Fraserburgh.

He is fast gaining a reputation as one of the top golf coaches in the North East as well as retaining his status as one of the regions best players (he turned pro off a handicap of plus five!)

Victories in three North East Alliance fixtures on the trot in February this year have proven that, despite a shift of focus to coaching the game, he still has what it takes to shoot a low score.

There is no doubt that Kris still wants to make it as a Tour player and at Dunes we are working with him to help make this dream a reality.

In the mean-time though he is certainly enjoying helping the local golfers discover how to play better as he shares his wisdom in a series group and individual golf classes.

“Kris helped me a lot and he made it easy for me to understand. I was really impressed, I will be back for more and can’t speak highly enough about him. Thanks Kris I be passing it on to my friends as well!” Alan Lobaczewski

If you want to realise your golfing potential then book a one to one lesson with Kris and let him guide you to your best golf.

Improve your scores – guaranteed!

Your ability to score is significantly influenced by your ability to minimise the number of putts per round.
But it is not simply a case of going out there and practicing your putting!

Did you know?…The leading money winner on the PGA Tour (Justin Thomas) this year only made 58.47% from the 5-10 foot range. Tiger Woods only made 56.00%.

If any amateur golfer can average over 50% over the course of a season from this critical scoring range, I would very much like to meet them!

In the words of Dave Pelz, short game coach to the world’s top players,
“If you want to score, the most important “game” to improve is your short game. Second most important is your putting game. And the least important is your power-swing, ball striking game, the game you’ve been practicing all these years!”

Here is why…
Dave Pelz places the short game (this is chipping and pitching) above putting because all the stats show that how close you hit it to the hole has a significant impact upon how many putts you take.
Take a look at the 2018 season putting stats from current World Number One, Brooks Koepka.

Notice how the percentage success rate from outside 10ft drops off a cliff. Outside of 20ft Brooks doesn’t make that many putts at all!

This means all golfers will benefit hugely by hitting the ball closer to the hole from 100 yards and in.

Practice is not just about hitting ball after ball and spending a lot of time at it – in fact it is entirely not that! Good practice is about being deliberate with what you are doing and to make practice more like your play.

The Golf Studio at Dunes provides highly accurate distance information and is ideal for working on your short game throughout the winter.

Wedge Fitting at Dunes Golf Centre

Over the last 15-20 years the manufacturers have strengthened the lofts on Iron sets meaning the Pitching Wedge has strengthened from 52° to 45°. In fact, the Pitching Wedge on one new set of Irons is 42°. That is a three club length gap to the Sand Wedge.

No wonder we haven’t seen a drop in scores despite the longer tee shots. With a gap between the Pitching Wedge and Sand Wedge (which they couldn’t strengthen as we needed that loft to get out of bunkers) extended to 11°, in the scoring zone you are effectively playing with a Sand Wedge and 8 Iron!

If you want a better short game, as a minimum you must do the following: get very good at playing 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4Pitching Wedge shots and, as I would also recommend, you put a 50 or 52° Wedge in your bag.
This Wedge (the ‘Gap’ Wedge to fill the gap the manufacturer’s have created between the PW and SW) will make it much easier for you to play better shots into greens.

I currently carry 4 wedges; They are a 46° wedge, a 50° Gap wedge and a 54° Sand wedge and a 58° lob wedge. I feel this gives me the versatility around the greens that I require.

We are a Custom Fitting Centre for most of the major brands including Ping, Cleveland, Callaway, Vokey, Taylormade and Mizuno.

What wedges do you carry?
We have a loft and lie machine and will gladly check your loft gaps FREE of charge! It only takes us a few minutes to do by using our special Loft and Lie machine. We can also talk to you about what distance gaps you have in your set as well as what bounce angles would suit you best – are you a Digger or a Sweeper?

If you want to make 2019 your best and most enjoyable year on a golf course we suggest you come for an assessment lesson at Dunes Golf Centre. It is open to golfers of all ages and levels of ability and is a fantastic learning experience costing just £30 for the 60 minute session.

Drive Chip Putt Championship 2018

Junior Golf Tournament Inspires a Generation

We are delighted to report that nearly 30 local youngsters took part in the 3rd Annual Scottish Junior Drive Chip Putt Championship at Dunes Golf Centre on Sunday 27th May 2018.

The weather was not as fine as it had been over the previous few days but the clouds did nothing to lessen the spirit shown by the competitors on the day

The event saw the children, aged between 4 and 15 years old, play three Drives, three Chips and three Putts with points awarded for their performance in each skill.

The idea of the event is to inspire the youngsters to play golf and enjoy the thrill of playing competitively.

For many of the children it was their first taste of competitive golf and from their reactions it looks like they are hooked!

At Dunes Golf Centre we are committed to growing the game of golf and we have already established a thriving junior academy that is setting up the future of golf in the North East of Scotland.

In the 10 to 15 year old event Aaron Hastie finished in 3rd place with 60 points, In second place was Matthew Cardno on 73 and the champion, with winning for the third year in a row with 101 points was Billy Myers.

In the 8 to 9 age group Finlay Anderson was second with 31 points and our winner was Arran Simpson with a very impressive 77 points.

We also had a prize for the leading girl and this went to Kaelyn Simpson with a score of 41 points

In the 4 to 7 year old group Riley Whyte finished in third spot with 48 points, Scott Fowlie took second on 60 points, thanks in part to being the only player to hole the putt from 30ft for 25 points! However, Kameron Brown become a two-time winner as he successfully defended the title he won last year with a score of 64 points to take the top spot.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and to all of the Parents, Grandparents, Aunties and Uncles who came along to support on the day.

Finally, a big thanks to our sponsors, photogifts.co.uk who’s support meant entry to the event was free of charge.

Play DRIVE, CHIP, PUTT at Dunes
The scoring rings for the chipping and putting are still set up on the Short Game Zone so why don’t you come down to see how many points you can score with 3 chips and 3 putts?
We also have an excellent 9 hole chip and putt course that will test even the greatest of golfers.

The cost to play the Short Game Zone is just £2.50 per day (equipment hire is free of charge) unless you are on one of our weekly group coaching sessions such as love.golf, men’s beginner groups or junior golf programmes, in which case it is free of charge.

Are you a chip ‘n’ putt wizard?
Enter the next of our Mini Major Golf Tournaments
The Mini US Open 14th to 17th June

For each of the real major events in golf we host our very own Mini-Golf version. These events are for everyone to enjoy, young and old!

Following on from our Mini US Masters, we now have the second Mini Major of the year, the Mini US Open.

We have carefully designed a fun yet challenging 9-hole chip n putt course that will test all skill levels from complete beginner to professional golfer.

There are no handicaps being used so it is open to everyone, including complete beginners! You don’t even need any clubs or balls as these can all be provided free of charge!

We have some great prizes thanks that will be awarded in the following categories:
First, Second, Third for Men
First, Second, Third for Ladies
First, Second, Third for Juniors 12 and under

You can enter as many times over the 4 days as you wish. Your best score will be the one that counts. Each attempt at a round (9 holes) costs £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for 12 and unders.

The bounce is your best friend – Bunker Play Pt3

Bunker Play
The ball comes out on a cushion of sand

To do this effectively we use the bounce of the club. The bounce stops the club digging too deep into the sand. If you are someone who takes deep troughs of sand and finds the ball barely moving then you have almost certainly, in some way, reduced the effective bounce angle of the club.

(Click these links to read Bunker Play PART ONE and Bunker Play PART TWO)

The yellow drawings on the four images here show how the bounce angle changes depending on what state the club is in as it strikes the sand.

Returning the hands to a central position at impact will ensure that the correct loft and bounce of the club is applied.

As you can see if the clubface is closed or the shaft is leaning towards the target then the bounce angle is reduced.

The Plugged Ball aka The Fried Egg

There is one exception to my lessons on bunker play and that is when the ball is plugged.
In this case we need to reduce the bounce angle and get the club to travel deep into the sand.

The slightly closed clubface and steep angle of attack is encouraged by keeping your weight on the left side and the hands ahead of the ball. This will negate the bounce angle so the club drives down to get underneath the ball.

The amount of bounce that is on a club to begin with varies. A low bounce club has 4-5° right up to a high bounce angle being 16-18°. For FREE expert help come and talk me at Dunes Golf Centre but for now here is a general guide for choosing the correct bounce:

More Bounce
The fluffier the sand, the deeper the sand, the lighter the sand, the longer the grass in the rough, and the steeper the golfer swings the wedge down into the ball, the more bounce on the sole is required to be consistent in shot making.

Less Bounce
Conversely, the more coarse the sand, the more shallow the sand, the heavier and wetter the sand, the shorter the grass in the rough, and the more level the golfer swings the wedge down into the ball, the less bounce on the sole is required to be consistent in shot making.

Callaway’s new Sure Out wedge is just the job!

If you find yourself struggling with your bunker play, the Sure Out just may be the miracle wedge you’ve been searching for.
This is the by far THE best club available today, to get you out of the sand and on to the green in just one shot.

It really lives up to its name, giving you a SURE OUT, nearly every time.

When Hank Haney teamed up with Callaway to design the Sure Out, he made SURE it was developed to make it easier for you… the amateur golfer… not the Tour Pro… to get out of the bunker and hit any shot around the green easier.

The larger, wider and heavier enhanced-camber, high-bounce Sure Out sole lets you effortlessly and cleanly glide through any type of sand or rough.

The technology is like nothing you have ever seen.
When comparing it to a traditional sand wedge, you’ll see how much has been built into the Sure Out to give you the ultimate advantage
And if the Callaway Sure Out isn’t enough to have you jumping with excitement… we have something even better for you….

…FREE ENTRY TO THE BUNKER CLINIC WITH PURCHASE
When you buy a Sure Out Wedge you will get a free place on our bunker clinic to make sure it works perfectly for you.

How to improve your scores…

Improve your scores – guaranteed!
Your ability to score is significantly influenced by your ability to minimise the number of putts per round.
But it is not simply a case of going out there and practicing your putting!

Did you know?…The leading money winner on the PGA Tour (Dustin Johnson) last year only made 58.87% from the 5-10 foot range. Bubba Watson only made 46.09%.

Take a look at the 2016 season putting stats from current World Number One, Dustin Johnson.

Notice how the percentage success rate from outside 10ft drops off a cliff. Outside of 15ft Dustin doesn’t make many putts at all!

This means all golfers will benefit hugely by hitting the ball closer to the hole from 110 yards and in.

Practice is not just about hitting ball after ball and spending a lot of time at it – in fact it is entirely not that! Good practice is about being deliberate with what you are doing and to make practice more like your play.

We have developed some superb practice games that will guarantee you lower scores on the course. The first of these is called ‘Target Pitching’.

Very simply, you play 5 balls from 20 yards and score points depending how close to the hole you finish. This is repeated at 10 yard intervals right out to 110 yards. Important: We highly recommend using your normal ‘match’ balls for this game as we do not want to create extra variables by changing the ball type. So, if you normally play a Titleist ProV1 make sure you have five, in good condition, for this game.

Add up your score total on the score sheet provided and each time you play you should try to beat your best ever score.
You can only play the game once in a day and, if you start-off badly, you are not allowed to start again!

A more advanced way to play the game is to play with just one ball from each distance and to randomise the order in which you play each shot. This makes it even more like your play!

The Golf Studio at Dunes provides highly accurate distance information and is ideal for playing this game and it means you can use a brand new ball as you can get it back each time.

Wedge Fitting at Dunes Golf Centre

Over the last 15-20 years the manufacturers have strengthened the lofts on Iron sets meaning the Pitching Wedge has strengthened from 52° to 45°. In fact, the Pitching Wedge on one new set of Irons is 44°.

If you want a better short game, as a minimum you must do the following: get very good at playing 1/2, 5/8 or 3/4 and 7/8 Pitching Wedge shots and, as I would also recommend, you put a 50 or 52° Wedge in your bag.
This Wedge (the ‘Gap’ Wedge to fill the gap the manufacturer’s have created between the PW and SW) will make it much easier for you to play better shots into greens.

CLICK HERE TO BOOK A  FITTING AT DUNES GOLF CENTRE

I currently carry 3 wedges; They are a 48° wedge, a 52° Gap wedge and a 56° Sand wedge. I feel this gives me the versatility around the greens that I require although the inclusion of a 60° Lob wedge could also prove beneficial.

We are a Custom Fitting Centre for Cleveland Golf with a cart that carries all of the different heads and shaft combinations. We also have fitting clubs that you can try from Callaway, TaylorMade, Ping, Mizuno and Orka.

If you want to make 2017 your best and most enjoyable year on a golf course we suggest you come for an assessment lesson at Dunes Golf Centre. It is open to golfers of all ages and levels of ability and is a fantastic learning experience costing from just £20 for the 60 minute session.
